WRITING FOR THE WEB

This course examines a variety of rhetorical contexts for web page design and content development and explores contemporary issues including usability, accessibility, and credibility. Students will create websites with a focus on document design. No previous experience in HTML coding or website development is required.

TECHNICAL WRITING FOR SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING MAJORS

Foundational course in business and professional writing that emphasizes writing in several genres, communication ethics, cultural communication, and document design. Students use digital platforms for peer collaboration.

TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION FOR SOFTWARE ENGINEERS

Part one of a two-semester capstone course that includes computer science and technical communication objectives. Teams develop a software project defined  by a client.  The semester culminates in the development of a prototype and its demonstration in a formal presentation.  Supporting deliverables that teams create include a project vision statement, user stories, and a usability/design support document.  The series of deliverables students create integrates written, oral, visual, electronic and nonverbal rhetorical skills for various audiences, purposes, and contexts applicable to students’ professional experiences in the workplace.

PROFESSIONAL REPORT WRITING

Writing intensive course that emphasizes audience analysis, genre, and rhetorical style in research for and preparation of reports and proposals for businesses and non-profit organizations.

ISSUES IN COMPOSITION

Writing intensive course using nonfiction readings as springboards for students to explore the theme of place in several genres of writing. The capstone assignment is a multimodal digital assignment with the goal of submitting the work to the Journal for Undergraduate Multimedia Projects.

LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION

This course serves as an introduction to the theory and practice of leadership from a communication perspective. Students analyze and use their personal leadership styles to develop leadership communication skills through team projects and classroom exercises.

ORGANIZATIONAL RHETORIC

Uses rhetorical theory to analyze organizational communication. This course emphasizes analysis of risk communication, crisis rhetoric, and critical evaluation of communication strategies.

INTERVIEWING: PROCEDURES AND PRACTICES

Principles drawn from contemporary interpersonal communication theory are applied to informational, employment, and persuasive interview situations. Practical application of theoretical concepts is encouraged through in-class role-playing interviews and through analysis of interviewing techniques.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Advanced course on the principles and techniques in research, composition, organization, and delivery of speeches in different genres in clear language appropriate to the rhetorical context.

INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH COMMUNICATION

Foundational course that introduces explores the theories and practice of speech communication behavior to promote communication competence in interpersonal, small group, and public speaking situations.

FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION

Hybrid course that introduces public speaking, interpersonal, small group, and nonverbal communication with an emphasis on cultural communication. This course has been named a Program of Excellence by the National Communication Association Basic Course Division.
